Activities Coordinator Julie, completes incredible challenge for Cancer charity!
Thursday 18 February 2021
A massive CONGRATULATIONS to our very own pocket rocket, the amazing Julie Wood, Activities Coordinator at Cavendish Park Care Home, for smashing the January ‘Run50 Challenge’ for cancer charity, Maggie’s Centre.
Completing 50 miles, Julie’s raised over £470 to support the amazing work at Maggie’s Centre’ a charity Julie holds very close to her own heart.
Keep on running… ?♀️?♀️
As 2021 dawned Julie decided this was it was her time to make a difference and what better way to do it than join ‘Team Cheltenham’ in the amazing Run50 Challenge!
So on January 2nd, Julie dusted off the running shoes and set off on an incredible feat, (no pun intended!) to run an average of 1.6 miles EVERYDAY to achieve her goal of 50 miles. However, with gyms closed this meant Julie had to get creative and on her lunch break… come rain or shine, she could be found running around the beautiful Cavendish Park gardens to get those all important steps in!
With a mountain of support behind Julie from her Cavendish Park family she quickly ticked off the miles and got ever closer to that 50-mile mark! Running before work as the sun rose, during her lunch break and even late into the evening, Julie determination to reach her goal and raise as much as money as possible for Maggies was just awesome!
One last run… in the sparkle of fresh snow
On the 31st of January, Julie laced up her running shoes for the last time and set out on her final run through a beautiful snow-dusted Worcestershire. Completing her final 2.57 miles she’d done it!! 50 miles in one month!
If this amazing milestone wasn’t enough, Julie set a fundraising goal of £150 at the start of her challenge and has already achieved over triple that amount!

What is the Maggie’s Centre ‘Run50 Challenge’?
The Run50 challenge is a virtual fundraising challenge hosted by the cancer support charity Maggie’s Centre, in which people are encouraged to kick-start the new year and help support people with cancer, their families and their friends! To take part in the challenge all participants must do is simply walk, run or even sprint a combined 50 miles over the month of January in an attempt to raise as many funds as possible for the charity!
The first Maggie’s centre or “maggie’s” as it’s better know today, was founded in Edinburgh in 1996 by Maggie Jencks and her husband Charles. When Maggie was 47, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly five years later she was told the cancer had returned. Maggie and her husband discussed how people with cancer needed ‘somewhere better’ to go and enlisting the help of their closest friends from the architectural world, in 1996 the first centre was brought to life and opened!
