Environmental Sustainability at Majesticare

Our Carbon Footprint

At Majesticare, we’ve taken proactive steps to manage our carbon emissions through a comprehensive range of environmental sustainability initiatives. Our Central Team includes a dedicated Environmental Sustainability Governance (ESG) Champion, Laura Rowley, who spearheads monthly campaigns to drive positive change. These monthly sustainability efforts are designed to gradually transform daily practices within our Care Homes, ensuring our teams integrate environmentally conscious procedures into every aspect of their work. By implementing these ongoing initiatives, we’re fostering a culture of sustainability that benefits both our residents and the planet.

Majesticare’s ESG Champion, Laura, shared, I am excited and passionate about the sustainability initatives we are implementing throughout Majesticare. It’s amazing to see the positive impact it is already having. I love how everyone is working as a team to make this a success. My favourite initiative so far is the car sharing competition, I think its a great opportunity for the teams to have fun while being environmentally conscious”

Below, we highlight some of our key monthly sustainability initiatives that are making a difference across our Majesticare Care Homes.

CareHomeLife

At Majesticare, we’ve teamed up with CareHomeLife to streamline our supply chain, using one supplier means that there are fewer deliveries. CareHomeLife also assists us with a resource refill service and where this is not possible, new products are sent in sustainable packaging. This approach not only enhances product usage efficiency but also reduces the carbon footprint throughout multiple operative teams.

Car Sharing

In September 2024, we launched a car-sharing competition across the Majesticare Family, encouraging our teams to share rides as frequently as possible. To enter the competition, our Majesticare Teams need to send us daily selfies of them on their way to work! This initiative not only helps reduce our organisation’s carbon emissions but also saves on fuel costs, eases congestion in our care home car parks, and strengthens social connections within our work family as they commute together to work.

Rain Water Recycling

We’ve introduced water butts across our care homes to collect and use natural rainwater. This eco-friendly solution allows us to water our plants, clean outdoor furniture, and wash our shoes without relying on running taps.
By using collected rainwater, we’re reducing our environmental impact and conserving valuable resources.

Bee Hives and Honey

Our home in Bedfordshire, Milton Ernest Hall and our home in Somerset, Oaktree Court both have their very own bees! Their beehives are managed by local beekeepers and the home’s gardeners. Having these little buzzing friends in each of our care homes enhances local pollination, supports plant health, and offers educational opportunities for residents. Oaktree Court’s hive produces fresh honey for residents and the local area, this improves garden vitality and fosters community engagement through honey sales. Together, these hives contribute to vibrant ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and connect residents with the natural world.

Tree Planting & Bug Hotels

At Milton Ernest Hall, our care home in Bedfordshire, they have enhanced their sustainability efforts and resident well-being through two key initiatives.
Firstly, gardener Alan has carefully planted 50 trees, which are now blooming! The impact of this improves air quality and biodiversity and enhances the already beautiful natural surroundings for residents.
Secondly, they’ve introduced a lovely Bug Hotel nestled in the grounds of the home. The Bug Hotel not only engages our residents in an educational and interactive outdoor experience, learning about local insect species, but also fosters a thriving ecosystem by attracting beneficial insects and contributing to local biodiversity preservation. These initiatives enrich the residents’ environment and demonstrate the care home’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Battery Recycling

At Majesticare, we’re committed to responsible waste management. When our battery recycling bin is full, we ensure that the used batteries are taken to a certified waste disposal center. This careful process helps prevent harmful chemicals from entering the environment and supports our dedication to sustainability. This initiative is carried out through each of our Majesticare Care Homes.

Green Can Crushing

We recently launched our Green Can Crushing Project across all our homes, featuring mounted can crushers to boost recycling efforts. Inspired by a member of the gardening team at Oaktree Court Care Home, this initiative aims to enhance recycling efficiency and increase recycling rates by freeing up space in our bins. Crushing cans before disposal not only saves energy and water in the recycling process but also makes recycling more effective. Our crushing competition, running through October 2024, adds an extra incentive for our care home teams to recycle more and make a positive impact!

Our 'Gloves Off' Campaign

At Majesticare, our “Gloves Off” campaign combats plastic waste from disposable gloves in healthcare settings. While gloves are crucial for hygiene in certain scenarios, we recognise they’re often overused when proper hand washing suffices. We advise our team not to wear gloves for routine activities like serving meals, aiding activities, or assisting residents in communal areas. Gloves should be worn for personal care, assisting ill residents, wound care, applying creams, food preparation, and medication administration. By following these guidelines, we can significantly reduce plastic pollution in healthcare environments.
