Lashbrook House Raise Funds For the Red Cross

A party with a Second World War Theme was held at Lashbrook Care Home to Raise funds for the British Red Cross. Residents at the home and their families listened to live Forties and Fifties Music and enjoyed traditional war time food. Authentic military tents were erected in the garden and winning raffle ticket numbers were drawn out of a replica bomb, Pennie Carter the home’s activity coordinator arranged the party to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the British Red Cross. She said “ the residents really enjoyed the party and it brought back a lot of memories”.

Each Year Majesticare support the World Cup Day, Representatives Suzanne Meadows Social Care Manager and Alicia Watson Activity coordinator from Tewkesbury Care Home were invited to Present the ‘Majesticare Community Shield’ which this year was awarded to Roy Sumner for services to the community. Suzanne said “ The football teams regularly visit the home and the residents love to ask questions as to how well the teams are playing”.

We attend every year and our residents really enjoy the World cup day.

Majesticare Raise money and awareness for CPBF

Nathan Hart who works for Majesticare Luxury Care Homes heard about all the good work that the CPBF do for carers and decided to arrange and host a charity event in Heanor, to raise money for the Charity. He arranged for local bands to play, contacted local businesses and suppliers who kindly donated fantastic raffle prizes, worked tirelessly to promote the event and raised £1000 for the Charity.

Majesticare Staff members from Ashfields Care Home in Heanor and management from Head Office gave up their time to attend as did many people from the local Community.

The night began with a bang as local pop/rock covers band A.K.A took to the stage and performed a thirty minute set of music which got the crowd dancing along to the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Themed Bingo was played during the evening and Angela Boxall Compliance and Projects Manager for Majesticare won and donated her winnings back to the charity. The evening continued with Classic rockers Doc/Rock taking to the stage to deliver a 30minute set of classic rock songs.

Nathan Hart said he could not believe the generosity of businesses donating prizes for the raffle . Design Office who is based in Alsager donated a £50 gift voucher. Tim Hodgson Director of Moore Large and Co Ltd donated a Mountain Bike; Majesticare gave Ninendo 3DS and flat Screen Televison. Nathan went on to say “The night was a huge success and enjoyed by all who attended. He said he would like thank everyone who helped to make it a success.

The staff joined in the fund raising day by wearing red throughout the day. The Residents are also providing their favourite recipes to Lucy Clark –Bolton (Staff Member) who is compiling a Recipe Book to raise funds for charity.

Majesticare ‘s Walk of life

Jane Ratcliffe Personal Assistant of Erica Hart Managing Director of Majesticare took up the challenge of a sponsored walk between Burton and Swarkeston to raise funds for five charities, Macmillan, Marie Curie, Headway, CLic Sargent, and the Alzheimers Society. Jane and her family decided to raise funds due to friends and family having suffered these illnesses over years. Jane wanted to give back to these charities as a thank you for all the support her and the family have been given over the years, Majesticare supported Jane and sponsored Jane to do the walk. Jane raised a vast amount in total. Erica Hart MD of Majesticare said “we always support our staff who want to raise funds for charities we are an organisation who pride ourselves in “giving back”. We are really proud of Jane and I want to say a personal well done to her.

Welland Ladies Football team are ready to put their best foot forward this season, thanks to sponsorship from Tewkesbury Care Home owned by Majesticare Luxury Care Homes.
Jenny King Manager at Tewkesbury : “We are really proud and delighted to be sponsoring the Ladies team. We already sponsor the childrens team so when approached by the club to see if we would like to offer any other support, our residents thought it was a wonderful idea. I have residents in my home who love football and my staff take them to watch the youngsters play so I am sure they will now be delighted to go along to support the ladies team as well.
Four of the team came to Tewkesbury Care home to show the residents their new football strip and to enjoy the bonfire night at the care home. They spent the evening chatting to the residents and enjoying the celebrations. Tewkesbury is one of 16 Care homes throughout the country.

Charity Event - Ross Court

A team from Ross on Wye completed the London to Brighton cycle ride on the 17th June 2012 in just under 6 hours. The ride was 54 miles and 37,000 people finished. The team raised £2,500 for the British Heart Foundation- Ross Court donated £250.

Marathon Run Raises Funds For Local Care Home

Lawton Rise Specialist Dementia Home in Golden Hill Stoke on Trent, were presented with a cheque for £350 for the Resident Comfort Fund by Michelle Tideswell.

Resident Mr. Michael Cotterill and his wife, were neighbours of Michelle and her family and since Michael became a resident at Lawton Rise they have remained good friends, visiting Michael as often as they can. Michelle said "I wanted to give something back to the home as they have been so amazing in caring for Michael." She went on to say that she decided that running a marathon in Loch Ness would be a perfect way to raise money as Michael used to be a runner before he became ill.

Sally Latham, Home Manager at Lawton Rise said "this is a remarkable achievement and I am delighted to receive the cheque on behalf of the residents". The home hosted a BBQ to say thank you to Michelle and Michael's wife and presented Michelle with a bouquet of flowers.

New Town Mayor Attends Glebefields Olympic Games Ceremony

Lady Saye & Sele and The Town Mayor, Tony Ilot officially opened the games with the lighting of the Glebefields Torch. The games which were organised by Majesticare's Joyce Furey have been running throughout the month with the final due to take place on 31st July, where a lucky winner will be presented with the Games Trophy. Both Lady Saye & Sele and Mayor Tony Ilot said "It was such a wonderful afternoon" the Olympic torches made by the residents, as well as the Olympic badges that we received made it a very special day to remember.

Ross Court Planting Ceremony to Mark Diamond Jubilee

As a fond reminder of the Diamond Jubilee Two Sapling Cedar Trees were planted at Ross Court.

Ross Court's eldest resident, Mrs Mabel Eldridge and Sian Price, longest serving staff member, helped Mr Alan Davies of Forestry Operations to plant Two Cedar of Lebanon Trees in the grounds of the home. The trees were planted to mark the occasion of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.

Majesticare Sponsor Maintenance Manager on London to Brighton Cycle Challenge

Mike Davies Maintenance Manager for Ross Court in Ross on Wye completed a cycle ride, cycling from London to Brighton to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. In total £4.1million was raised for the foundation.

Mike decided to undertake the ride when he found out that his best friend's wife aged 39 suffered a stroke. He joined a team of 3 other people who were also doing the challenge. Mike completed the London to Brighton Cycle Ride in 8 hours 15 minutes. Majesticare donated £250 to his remarkable effort.

Kate Emmott - Daughter Of Business Development Manager For Majesticare Wins Olympic Row Challenge

The 2012 'DFDS' Olympic Row Challenge has been won by Kate Emmott.

Kate was thrilled to receive the challenge prize, a weekend for 2 in Amsterdam, courtesy of Fitness Challenge.

Kate a 1st year Sociology Student at Newcastle University plans to work in the mental health sector of the prison service after graduation.

Hoping to take her trip this summer with her friend, she said "I'm really looking forward to experiencing the different sights, sounds and culture the city of Amsterdam has to offer, I have never been there before which makes it even more exciting".

Kate may be returning to Amsterdam in the future as she is looking to complete her 3rd year dissertation in either Amsterdam or Sweden. Julie Emmott BDM for Majesticare said "I am really proud that she has won - she is working so hard at University so to win this as well is an amazing achievement".

Majesticare residents at Highfields Care Home have been busy celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee in style. Family, friends and staff all joined in the festivities to celebrate 60 years of Queen Elizabeth being in Throne.

Sue Hall and Linda Brumpton (pictured right) helped organise celebrations at Highfields Care Home, and got into the spirit of things by dressing up as two of the Beverley Sisters, while Chef Christine Logue prepared food that was fit for a Queen.

Charity Fashion Show, Supported By Majesticare, Helps Raise £16,000 for Leukaemia Research

Following the loss of a close friend, Angela Boxall Compliance Manager for Majesticare and her school friends continued their work to raise funds for Leukemia Research.

Friends took to the catwalk at Morley Hayes Golf Club to continue their fundraising, which so far amounts to over £16,000. The school friends all from Heanor put on a charity fashion show in front of nearly 100 friends, family and local businesses to help the charity. Majesticare kindly gave back by sponsoring and also donating a significant amount to boost funds. "Angela Boxall said she couldn't thank Majesticare enough for all their support and was delighted that the fashion show was such a success.

Roger Pratap, Majesticare Chairman, Presents Award At Great British Care Awards

On Saturday 12th May at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London provided a spectacular backdrop for the national finals of the Great British Care Home Awards where the fifteen category winners were announced. Majesticare were one of the main sponsors for the awards and Roger was invited to present an award to Ancillary worker of the year.

The Great British Care Home Awards, are the national finals from the series of nine regional Great British Care Awards in Autumn 2011. Winners from each region were invited to compete once again to become the national champions.

There were a total of fifteen award categories available for nomination, which represent all areas of the care sector, whether it be older people or specialist services and from frontline staff such as care workers and care managers to people who have made an impace in other ways. The awards were presented by broadcater Ben Shephard and the evening concluded with music from a live band and dancing into the night.

The awards support a chosen charity, The Care Professionals Benevolent Fund, the registered charity for the care sector that support current, former and retired care professionals by providing assistance to relieve financial hardship or sickness and also provide advice and guidance on the availabillity of state support and links with debt counsellors.

Majesticare Compliance Manager's Skydive Tribute

A group of old school friends reunited to skydive in memory of a classmate who died. Phil Burrows was taken ill after he wed American sweetheart Mandy Hansen in July and died just three months after their wedding at 36 years old.

Angela Boxall, Compliance Manager for Majesticare and previous Home Manager of Ashfields Care Home in Heanor knew Phil, so when her friends floated the idea of a fundraiser in his memory Angela didn’t think twice about getting involved. The charity skydive in memory of Phil, who enjoyed adrenaline-fuelled hobbies such as sky diving and bull-running was held on 23rd April 2012. The friends also organised a fund-raising bagpack at Tesco's Heanor store.

Lashbrook House Gives Back To Parkinson's UK Charity

On Wednesday 18th April Lashbrook House Care Centre in Shiplake owned by Majesticare hosted an afternoon in aid of Parkinson's Awareness. The Event was organised to coincide with Parkinson's awareness week which ran from April 15th - 22nd 2012.

Lashbrook House have been hosting regular coffee mornings in aid of one of their chosen charities Parkinson's UK. These events have been well attended by residents of the home and local people, including the Stroke Club and Blue Bell's. The event on April 18th was attended by Nick Posford the regional fundraiser and representative of the organisation, who was presented with a cheque for £201.00 which had been raised through raffle's, events and a sponsored walk completed by Lashbrook residents from the care home to the Baskerville pub.

Lesley Mather (Social Care Manager - Majesticare) is looking forward to supporting Nick Posford with future fundraising events and is looking forward to meeting the new Parkinson's representatives Helen Old who will be based in Henley on Thames. She went on to say that Lashbrook House have residents with Parkinson's who are cared for at the home so it would be really nice to meet with Helen Old and support the new branch in any way we can.

Lawton Rise, part of the Luxury Care Home Group Majesticare were delighted to reach the finals of the Pinders' 2012 Healthcare Design Awards. The awards are considered to be the most important event in the care industry; seeking to acknowledge the contribution made by designers, architects, and the owners of care homes, hospitals and other care schemes to the well-being and quality of life for those in their care.

Lawton Rise is in the final for being a pioneering example of the luxurious settings offered by the Majesticare Group. It is designed with the latest standards of luxury, for residents, their family and friends.

Sally Latham, Home Manager commented "I am very pleased and excited for the home to be in the finals, it is an honour to have my home short listed for such a prestigious award".

Majesticare presented a cheque for £500 to Shaun Turner from the Care Professional Benevolent Fund. The awards have been organised by Pinders since 1999, and 12 years later has become an essential date in the healthcare industry.

Easter Bazarre At Oaktree Court

The sudden change in the weather, with the perfect blue skies over the previous week being replaced by overcast conditions and a chilling breeze across Wellington, could not dampen the enthusiasm for the very well supported Easter Bazarre held at Oaktree Court on Saturday 31st March 2012. After a multi-million pound investment by Majesticare, who own and manage this lovely building and beautiful wooded surroundings, this was a major event to promote closer integration between the Home and the Wellington Community. In support of this effort, the Mayor (Cllr Andrew Govier) and Miss Wellington (Molly Redstone) opened the event with Ann Bright (Home Manager) and Cllr Jackie Govier (pictured right) formally introducing the afternoons fun.

The residents and their guests all had a lovely time and were especially thrilled to have Wellington's own carnival 'queen' in attendance. Oaktree Court had requested the services of the real Queen but due to her very busy Diamond Jubilee commitments she was unable to attend. Molly Redstone, suitably dressed with her sparkling tiara and sash, went around and chatted with the residents (pictured left) which added much cheer and warmth to the afternoon.

Later that day, some of the younger children were led on an Easter Egg Hunt around the gardens and woodland area that surrounds the Home. This event was fantastic fun for all the children - and their Mums!! Sadly, it was one of the final events that Oaktree Court's resident activities super-hero, Jayne Allard, will be organising. She is hanging up her creative talents after over 23 years of helping many, many residents who have lived on this site and undoubtedly the thanks of many relatives and friends of current and former residents will be richly deserved for this very unassuming lady.

Hempton Fields Resident Beryl Plays Piano After 50 Years

Beryl Mitchell aged 88, has been a resident at Hempton Field for six months now, joining us in September 2011, along with her husband Geoffrey.

Recently one of Beryl's regular visitors, Jane, was chatting with her about a future visit as part of the Bodger's Wood Band. While Jane was visiting she noticed the piano in the Residents lounge and was asking Nina, the Activities Co-ordinator about the possibility of using it during the performance. When Jane left, Nina continued to chat to Berly about music and Beryl shared with her that her favourite tune was 'The British Grenadiers'. A few minutes later Beryll asked if she could sit and play the piano; something that she had not previously shown any interest in since living at Hempton Field.

Beryl then proceeded to play the piano, albeit a little 'rusty', but obviously she had been an accomplished player at one time. Nina went to fetch Geoffrey who expressed his shock at seeing Beryl play again. He declared that it had made his day!

Despite having a piano at home (Geoffrey also played), Beryl apparantly hadn't played the piano since teaching at a primary school at least 50 years ago. She had started learning to play at the age of just 8 years old. She remembers playing a tune which she called 'Thump' to encourage her pupils to achieve the exercises she'd set them.

Dementia UK Fundraiser Time For A Cuppa

Oaktree Court Care Home held a Fundraiser for Dementia UK by having a Silly Hat Party at their Wednesday Coffee Morning.

Residents made hats in the preceding weeks and paraded them for judging. Everyone had great fun making & showing their hats and there were some fantastic creations. The winner was Sue Webber, daughter of Resident Clifford, who made a rather aptly named Time for Tea Hat and second prize went to Resident Pam Holcombe who made her hat and dressed in the likeness of the Mad Hatter. There was a raffle with first prize of a spa treatment, kindly donated by the Cleeve Country Club & Hotel.

With cake & books stalls and raffle, the total amount raised for Dementia UK was £150.22p.

Lawton Rise Home Manager Invited To Speak At Key Event

Sally Latham, Manager of Lawton Rise was invited by the residential provider’s forum to do a presentation on “changing culture in dementia homes”.

Sally spoke about how she managed to successfully change culture in her 62 bedded nursing dementia home in Goldenhill, Stoke on Trent. Care Managers and Home Owners attended said they found her presentation inspiring.

Sally’s success has been due to her hard work and conviction that people living with dementia deserve loving, stimulation, dignity, choice and a high standard of individualised care.

Sally is also a winner of the West Midlands “Manager of the Year” award in the Great British Care Awards 2011

A Memorable Christmas

“SIR – I would like to tell you about the Christmas Day which my wife and I spent at Milton Ernest Hall.”

As we are fast approaching our century we decided, two years ago, that the time had come to give up the struggle of looking after ourselves and, after much cogitation and heart-searching, selected the hall for the few years left to us. We are delighted with that choice and especially after experiencing the superb day which we had on December 25th 2011.

Every effort had been made to make the occasion, starting some days before, with the quite lavish decorations which had entailed so much thought and work.

We were awakened for breakfast as usual and when ready, we went downstairs to be greeted warmly by all members of staff. Champagne and snacks appeared and we went into the decorated dining room and a Christmas lunch was served which we all enjoyed – nothing had been overlooked.

We had reservations as to what the day would be like as it was the first Christmas that we had spent away from our family but our fears were quite unfounded. We cannot but praise the effort that had gone into making this a memorable day.

It has been a fantastic year for luxury care home group Majesticare; attentive investment and attention to detail has ensured that five of Majesticare's employees have become finalists in the National Care Awards, Care Focus Awards and Great British Care Awards combined. One of the finalists is from Staffordshire's premier care home Lawton Rise, Stoke-on Trent.

Sally Latham, Home Manager at Lawton Rise, Stoke-on-Trent won West Midlands "Manager of the Year" award in the Great British Care Awards 2011. Unfortunately, Sally was unable to collect the award, however Erica Hart, Managing Director of Majesticare accepted the award and commented "Sally is a pioneering example of the high quality management who work at Majesticare, the hard work and dedication she provides for her residents and team are recognised; I am proud to accept this award for Majesticare on behalf of Sally".

Sally has been the Home Manager of Lawton Rise for the past 4 years and in her time there she has dedicated herself to providing excellent leadership skills and standards of care which are second to none.

Wedding Anniversary Celebrations For Oaktree Court Resident

Wellington Couple Geoffrey & Patricia Wyatt celebrated 61 years of marriage and their Son Steven's 59th birthday on the 2nd September with 8 of their family and friends at Oaktree Court Care Home, where Pat is a resident.

Pat, a lifelong Wellingtonian, was the daughter of Mr Dunn the Cobbler, North St. Geoff was born in Swansea and moved to Wellington in 1941, when the population was only 6,000! The young couple met at a dance in Culmstock, where Pat was being escorted by another gentleman admirer!

Their wedding ceremony was held at St John Fisher Church in Mantle St with the reception at the Saville Hotel. They honeymooned at the Tralee Hotel, Bournemouth. Their first child Steven was born on their 2nd wedding anniversary.

Oaktree Court staff Rosemarie, Jean and their daughters spent Friday decorating the Badger Sett Dining Room with original photo boards of wedding portraits, good luck telegrams, old school photos of Steven and plenty of balloons and ribbons. Chef Julie Sellick from Oaktree Court catered for the evening including an anniversary cake for Pat and Geoff as well as a birthday cake for Steven.

Haydn and Eileen Ashman have celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss with a double suprise.

A party was arranged for them at Oaktree Court by daughter Glynis, who had to let her Dad in on the secret at the last minute when she discovered he was planning to take Eileen, a resident at the Care Home, out for a meal. Family and friends packed the home's Badger Sett Dining room which had been converted into a party venue with flowers, balloons, streamers and banners.

House Chef Julie Sellick made the celebration cake and provided a buffet and Care Worker Rosemarie Stevens came in on her day off to help the party go with a swing. Then, just before Glynis was due to fly home, news came that a Grandson had arrived in New Zealand making Haydn & Eileen Great Grandparents.

Coronation Street Star Opens Oaktree Court Wellington Rooms

Actress Amanda Barrie, well known to many for her part as Alma Baldwin in Coronation Street, officially opened the new development at Oaktree Court Nursing Home, Wellington.

Somerset Hills Chorus also sang a medley of numbers including Rock Around The Clock for residents, staff and visitors. Guests were entertained with the Birds of Prey and also Punch and Judy.

Courtfields Community School student Emma Lane was presented with a gift voucher as her prize for winning an art competition with her picture based on a wildlife theme. Emma's school was also presented with a cheque for £100.

A cheque was presented to St Margarets Hospice, as the home raised £820 by organising a bring and buy sale and a raffle. A big thank you was given to carer Rosemarie Stevens as she worked extremely hard in organising all the fundraising activites for the Hospice.

The King made a return to Oak Lodge Care Home

The King, aka Elvis made his return to the residents of Oak Lodge on June 12th sporting his famous white suite and combed back hair.

All were entertained by the show as “Elvis” sung and danced his way through old time classics and favourites from “Hound Dog” to “It’s Now or Never”. It was a great experience not to be forgotten.

Debbie, Care Home Manager commented; “the atmosphere was brilliant, we are so lucky to have “Elvis” here and the residents came alive with music. It was wonderful to see how they connected with him. It was a tremendous show”

Family and friends gather together to celebrate Marjorie Burgess's 100th Birthday at her party at Hempton Field Care Home.

Workers at Hempton marked the day by putting 100 balloons throughout the home and arranging a party in her honour. Marjorie's nephews, nieces, and great nieces visited for the occasion as did old family friends.

The landmark birthday was celebrated with a special handmade cake as well as a card from the Queen.

Home Manager Sally MacGregor said: "Marjorie came to the home in 2009 and since has become a big part of the Hempton family. Her birthday was a beautiful day and I am really happy that she enjoyed herself; it was a lovely party for her."

Marjorie was originally born in the West Courtry but moved to Thame to be closer to her family.

Majesticare Support Macmillan In Memory Of Roy Thomas

Majesticare presented a cheque to fundraiser Katherine North from Herefordshire Macmillan Cancer Relief branch.

Roger Pratap, Chairman of Majesticare commented "As a company, we are always seeking new opportunities to support charities; We chose the Hertfordshire Macmillan Cancer charity in memory of Roy Thomas who was WM Powells (builders) Managing Director." Roger went on to say "In memory of Roy we are donating £500 to the charity. Roy was involved in a development project for a Majesticare home in Tewkesbury but sadly passed away due to cancer and never had the opportunity to see the project completed."

Ross Court invited a special guest, a 19 year old pony called Bobby; Majesticare sponsored the pony a year ago and since then the residents and staff visit the Herefordshire branch of RDA. Recently they had a suprise visit when the previous owner brought Bobby to the home.

The staff of the home are also involved with the Ross Town event by entering the Pancake race, and are cleaning shoes dressed as victorians to raise money for comic relief day.

Tim Escott, a local student from Melksham Oak Community School has recently been sponsored by Majesticare so that he could purchase a new canoe to compete in competitions.

Linda Benison, Majesticare said "Tim is a local student doing very well; when we discovered he was looking for sponsorship we contacted our Business Development Manager whom was very interested in supporting him. I am proud that we were able to help."

Tim is very passionate about the sport and has recently been in France competing at national level for Team GB against countries from across the globe. Whilst there, he achieved 8th place in a 2k race and 10th place in a 200m race.

Twins celebrate 90th Birthday

A surprise party was held for Lincoln Born twins Iris Claughton and Reg Congo ahead of their 90th Birthday.

Both were treated to celebrations by their family. Reg is a resident at St Pauls. He was a gunner in the Navy during the Second World War and ward as builder afterwards.

Majesticare homes up and down the country came together to promote Dignity Action Day by hosting local events in their community.

Dignity Action Day gives everyone the opportunity to contribute to upholding people's rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for people receiving care. Dignity Action Day aims to ensure people in care are treated as individuals, are given choice, control and a sence or purpose in their daily lives and provide stimulating activities.

From Garden Parties to Karaoke we had it all going on and we have captured a few of the activities here to give you an insight of what went on in some of our homes.

Carers at Sampford Care Home, who had received training as 'dignity champions' delivered talks about improving people's rights to dignity in care. The event also included High Tea with Traditional Cucumber Sandwiches and a variety of exotic Tea's, whilst residents became aware of what dignity means to them. Julie Fisher from Sampford Care Home said "we aim to raise awareness about dignity, what dignity is and what it means to residents. We talk about respect and how everyone should be treated as an individual. We were chatting to relatives of the residents, as well as residents themselves about providing more interaction and really empathising with those in care."

The Mount jazzed up their day with 'Afternoon Karaoke and Fish 'n' Chips' whilst carers acted out scenarios where residents had to guess the situation. Patience Sibanda, Home Manager commented "The day was a huge success, people went away both entertained and educated."

Residents and Carers of Highfields Care Home came together to design and draw posters highlighting dignity, the pictures were displayed throughout the home for all to see. The event also saw residents enjoying the finer things in life with two chocolate fountains, fruit kebabs and fresh salads. Susan Grummett, Home Manager commented "The day was enjoyed by all; we dipped strawberries in chocolate whilst drawing our posters. Many were in thanks of becoming more aware of dignity".

Dignity Action Day is endorsed by Sir Michael Parkinson, who is a dignity champion himself.

St Pauls Care Home Receives Gold Standard Accreditation

Celebrations all around as Residents, Staff and members of the local community of St Pauls Care Home come together to celebrate a recent accreditation from The Gold Standards Framework.

The Gold Standards Framework is an organisation that provides high standards of training for care homes. They are highly renowned in the healthcare industry for improving health, quality of care and a reduction in hospitalisation. Care homes are expected to reach a high level of care before becoming accredited.

St Pauls Care Home is the first home out of the Majesticare Group to have received the accreditation, Erica Hart, Managing Director led the process and commented "this is a fantastic achievement and recognises the efforts of our St Paul's team. Lawton Manor Raises Awareness And Funds For Parkinson's UK

Healthcare professionals and members of the local community all gathered together at Lawton Manor Care Home on Wednesday 9th February to support a Parkinson's Awareness and fundraising event.

The event is part of Majesticares aim to support national charities through awareness building in the local community and by fundraising. Erica Hart, Managing Director of Majesticare, commented "As a company we try to support charities wherever possible; Parkinson's UK is a charity we have worked with over a period of time in other homes with great success. This charity provides a great deal of support for people suffering with Parkinson's and I am glad we can help to support them."

Regional Management Ramila Patel, Cheryl Ford and Amanda Elliott all came to Lawton Manor to provide presentations on Parkinson's and to answer any questions people had on a more personal level. There was also fundraising activities throughout the afternoon with raffles, tombola and a book sale. A Total of £500 was raised at the event. Cheryl Ford, Information and Support Manager for Parkinson's UK, commented "The event at Lawton Manor was excellent and provided a much needed opportunity to support the Parkinson's community in North Staffordshire. It is our hope to partner with Majesticare in the West Midlands on more of these types of events in the future."

Majesticare Care Home joins Gold Club for end of life care

Staff from St Pauls Care Home in Waddington were in London this week to receive a national award recognising their Gold Standard end of life care.

They were among nurses and managers from 36 care homes from across England to receive their Gold Standards Framework in Care Homes Quality Hallmark Awards at the Bi-Annual GSF in Care Homes Event, supported by Age UK.

Paula Wheat Home Manager of St Pauls Care Home in Waddington said “GSF has enabled staff to grow in expertise and confidence and has ensured that all residents are offered complete choice regarding their end of life care

GSF is helping homes like St Pauls to increase the number of residents approaching the end of their lives receive the care they want where they want it, protecting them from inappropriate hospital admissions and helping them to live well and die well in the place of their choice.

A Film Premiere Takes Place At Glebefields Care Home

The excellent work at Glebefields Care Home in getting residents involved in activites is being used as an example to others in the country by launching a 20 minute film, to be used as a training tool in other homes.

Banbury MP Tony Baldry and Town councillor Tina Wren joined residents and staff at the home for a special screening of the newly released DVD.

Glebefields was chosen to produce the DVD by NAPA (National Association of Providers of Activities for Old People). It is a registered charity offering training, advice and information in promoting high quality activity provision for the elderly.

Joyce Furey, Social Care Manager of Glebefields Care Home said "everyone really enjoyed themselves and had a great time during the DVD, with alot of residents undertaking activities that they have never done before.

Julie Emmott, Business Development Manager of Majesticare, said "The residents loved every minute of it; they were really excited about the launch. We want to thank NAPA for choosing us and everyone that helped with the film."

The King drops in at care home

THE King made a return for the residents of The Mount Care Home in Wargrave.

Ben Portsmouth, 31, performed his award-winning tribute to Elvis Presley at The Mount care home in School Hill to great applause.
He said “it was a different afternoon for them – and me.”

Mr Portsmouth, from Waltham St Lawrence, was invited to entertain the 37 residents by the home’s activities coordinator Sharon Darvell.
She said: “We are so lucky to have Ben here and the residents came alive with music. It was wonderful to see how they connected with him. It was a tremendous show.”

Mr Portsmouth won the UK Images Of The King competition earlier this year and will be going to Presley’s home town of Memphis to compete against other impersonators from around the world.

Double Celebrations For Highfields Care Home

Staff working for Highfields Care Home in Edingley Newark had plenty of reasons to be smiling when they gathered in the home for a prestigious award ceremony. The ceremony was held to say 'well done' to staff who had recently achieved NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications).

Twelve staff attended the ceremony at Highfields Care Home where the Managing Director of Majesticare, Erica Hart, presented certificates to mark their achievements.

Erica Hart said "It really is an honour to be able to present so many awards to our staff. This kind of event shows a truly dedicated team within the home and I was delighted to be able to say well done to each person individually. NVQs are about demonstrating practical not just theoretical knowledge. Each student has to demonstrate competence over a period of time. The public can be confident that the NVQ award holder can carry out their care to a national standard, inspected by the Care Quality Commission, and this proves the quality of our care services."

Erica went on to say: "Training and development is something we really encourage at Majesticare as it is important to invest in our staff."

Sue Grummett Home Manager who arranged the ceremony said all the members of staff attending this event have worked hard towards their NVQ's, and how she was very pleased they were receiving this formal recognition. The home also had another reason to celebrate as Highfields have just been upgraded from a two star to a three star rated excellent home.

Majesticare are proud to announce that 100% of their homes are now rated either 'Excellent' or 'Good' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with 65% of these being 'Excellent'. This represents a significant achievement for any healthcare provider in the current market and has assisted the group in achieving high levels of performance in recent months. The company are working towards achieving at least 90% 'Excellent' homes and with a number of inspections anticipated they are keen to continue improving their performance. Erica Hart, Managing Director, said "This most recent rating of three stars gives the Manager at Highfields Care Home and her team the recognition they deserve. Yet again everyone at the home has worked incredibly hard and they have shown immense levels of dedication." AN ENIGMA – code breaker and her flying instructor husband celebrated their 71^st wedding anniversary recently.

Phyllis and Hugh Jones, both 95, hosted a party for friends and family on Thursday, at Milton Ernest Care Home Bedford.

Mr. Jones said: “You can take four years off our marriage because we didn’t see each other during the war. “ I think the best thing about being married for us was being parents. We have two sons, and we also really enjoy doing things together.

“I think the secret to a long and happy marriage is working at it”.

The Joneses got married in 1939 but were separated when the Second World War broke out and Mr Jones joined the RAF.

He was stationed in Malta, where he became a flying instructor training bomber pilots, before returning to the UK after the war to take over his father’s bespoke tailoring business.

During the war Mrs. Jones worked at Bletchley Park where she worked to crack the Nazi’s Enigma code system. Mr. Jones said “When we were younger we had lots of hobbies, we enjoyed doing the garden”.

The Rt. Reverend William Pwaisiho OBE, Honorary Assistant Bishop of Chester, has given a service of thanks and dedication at Lawton Manor Care Home in Church Lawton.

Long standing friend of residents and staff Reverend Graham Joyce of All Saint's Church (Church Lawton), invited 'Bishop Willie' ahead of the launch of Lawton Manor's £1.6m development The Manor Garden Rooms.

Erica Hart, Managing Director of Majesticare, the luxury care home group which owns Lawton Manor, said "We are honoured to have Bishop Willie here today, and his kind words coupled with the preview of our new rooms have given our staff and residents a day to remember".

During the service Bishop Willie recognised Lawton Manor’s long standing team of dedicated staff, calling them “angels of god” and praising their work in caring for elderly people. A list of residents, relatives, staff and friends of Lawton Manor were invited to join the special service which was followed by a sumptuous high tea. Guests and dignitaries had the opportunity to preview the spacious new facilities at Lawton Manor, which include individually interior designed bedrooms with en-suite wet rooms, patio doors, direct dial phones, tea and coffee making facilities, fridges, HD televisions with DVD players, internet and electric fully profiling beds.

Majesticare premier care home just got even better

Coronation Street legend Liz Dawn MBE, who played Vera Duckworth on the soap for 34 years, was invited to officially open the extension to Lawton Manor, in Church Lawton, Stoke- on-Trent, ST7 3DD. The facility which is set in two acres of beautifully landscaped grounds will provide an extra 18 rooms at the home, all with en-suite showers, electric beds and flat-screen televisions. A Nintendo Wii room will enable residents to play console games, while a new Library, Picture House and hydrotherapy baths have been added.

Home Manager Sharon Smith said: "We've been increasing our numbers of nursing staff, care staff and catering staff. We have also taken on another full-time activities coordinator to work with our Social Care Manager Dawn Jones. The new facilities are for everyone in the home, not just for the clients who will move into the new rooms." Sharon went on to say "All the new rooms are individually designed, so no two are the same."

Work on the extension started in April last year and it was completed towards the end of last month. Speaking of the investment, Erica Hart, Managing Director of Majesticare, said: "It will enable us to future-proof the home and it is meeting the demands of the community. We've been encouraging the people who already live at Lawton Manor to think of the new extension as part of their home." Erica went on to say that "Lawton Manor, like all Majesticare’s care homes, has always offered the best possible quality of life but now with the completion of our extension, we can offer our residents, their friends and families even more."

Ronald Budd, aged 78, who has lived at Lawton Manor for seven years and is its longest-standing resident, said: "It’s a lovely place to live. I really enjoy it. The new extension is very nice." At the official opening ceremony residents welcomed visitors including soap star Liz by giving a performance of their singing talents. Liz said: "What a lovely place it is. It is in such a good position. You couldn’t wish for a better location." She added: "I do miss the stone cladding of Coronation Street. I had a happy time on the show, but 34 years is a long time."

Majesticare Residents share in Duke's cake

A celebration cake marking the visit of HRH The Duke of Gloucester to the new straw houses in Waddington, Lincolnshire, was shared with residents of a nursing home in the village.

Cutting the cake became one of the highlights of the trip for the Duke who then took a slice with him as he moved onto his next engagements. It was then shared with the 22 residents from St Paul’s Nursing Home who were delighted to learn that their afternoon tea treat was specially commissioned for the Royal guest.

It was crafted to look like the pioneering semi-detached straw houses built by North Kesteven District Council at nearby Brumby Crescent. Everyone in the village, including residents on trips out from the home, was fascinated during the eight month construction phase as straw bales formed he main basis of new energy efficient eco homes.

Chairman of North Kesteven District Council, Cllr Sue Howe later cut it for the residents, highlighting its Royal provenance and remarking on how comfortable and welcoming the home was.

Paula Wheat, manager of St Paul's, said: "Everyone's ended up having a slice, and they have all enjoyed it very much. It was a delicious cake made all the more special by the Duke’s association with it. We are very grateful to North Kesteven District Council for thinking of us and allowing us to share the occasion."

Care home comes alive with the sound of music

Residents enjoy singing, strumming and tapping along. The sound of music could be heard all over a care home as residents enjoyed a melodious experience.

Staff at Glebefields Care Centre in Drayton ran a music event with different activities taking place every day last week. Residents enjoyed a visit from an opera singer, a guitarist and a vicar and his wife who performed a rendition of There's a Hole in My Bucket. Those who were able also exercised to music and some residents enjoyed listening to tunes while in the bath or shower. Children also went to the home to perform dances. The event was part of a challenge called Music in the Air run by the National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People (NAPA).

The organisation invited care providers to find different ways of bringing music into the daily life of a home and a £3,000 prize is up for grabs. Sally Knocker, NAPA’s director of communications, said: "Music, perhaps more than anything else in a care home, has the potential to transform a mood in a room, whether to lift spirits or cause stress."

Joyce Furey, social care manager at Glebefields, said: "Of course we’d love to win but we learned so much by joining in and having a go at what they suggested. We’ve tried to involve relatives, volunteers and outside workers. It was really lovely week. We have been able to use music for exercise, relaxation, fun and have been obtaining the services of local people to help in our efforts. This has been an exciting week in the lives of the residents." Residents released balloons with wishes attached to them to end the week.

Majesticare, the luxury care home group, has announced a major investment in technologies to help reduce their Carbon Footprint.

Majesticare employed energy efficiency consultants to undertake survey on a number of their 17 homes in order to assess their energy efficiency and identify opportunities to make improvements.

The survey identified the opportunity to significantly reduce gas and oil consumption through the installation of advanced heating control systems which analyse all factors that can affect the operation of a heating system and then identifies the best possible plant performance for specific temperature requirements and a more efficient boiler firing pattern.

Steve Oakes, Finance Director commented “Climate change is one of the biggest threats to our planet, so it is critical that everyone plays their part. We are always looking for ways to improve our energy efficiency and the installation of advanced heating controls has a positive benefit to both the environment and improves the temperatures within our homes, which is beneficial for our residents.”

Majesticare plans state of the art care facility

Majesticare, the luxury care home group, has submitted plans to Wiltshire County Council for the construction of a new 58 bed purpose built care home adjacent to its existing Sampford home.

The proposal is for the redevelopment of its long established existing 70 bed facility and is planned to be undertaken in two phases. Once the new home is operational, Majesticare plans to demolish its existing home and construct 15 close care suites in its place.

Majesticare’s continued growth through acquisition and development underpins the continued drive towards excellence in person centred care. The team has already achieved success with all of Majesticare’s 17 homes achieving 2 or 3 stars with 65% attaining 3 Star (Excellent) status with the Care Quality Commission.

Majesticare completes further acquisition

Majesticare, the luxury care home group, has announced the completion of a deal to acquire Robins Close care home in Wellington, Somerset. Majesticare have operated the home for over 10 years and leapt at the opportunity to acquire the freehold property in a multi million pound deal.

Robins Close is a 61 bed, impressive period property which has been sympathetically extended. The property is set in acres of landscaped grounds, offering the residents considerable freedom. Majesticare have a significant capital investment plan to further enhance the care home and improve the environment for the residents.

Robins Close offers residential and nursing care and has a strong local reputation. The excellence in the home was recently recognised by the CQC who have awarded the home 3 Star (Excellent) status.

Commenting on the acquisition, Roger Pratap, Majesticare Chairman, said: “We are very pleased to be able to increase our portfolio of freehold homes to 12 through this acquisition. Majesticare reaches for the stars

Majesticare are proud to announce that following another successful Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, all of their 17 homes are now rated as either “Excellent” or “Good” and 65% of these homes are 3 star rated.

The most recent home to be upgraded to three stars was Nightingale Court in Kiddeminster. This represents a true success story for Majesticare, who have made significant improvements to the home since acquisition and have developed the home from a 1 star rating to the 3 star rating.

Roger Pratap, Chairman commented: “Achieving these star ratings across our Majesticare homes represents a significant achievement for any healthcare provider in the current market and reflects the high standards we expect of our homes and the focus on quality and positive outcomes for our residents. With a number of inspections anticipated, we are now focussed on continuing to increase the number of Excellent rated homes.”

Majesticare's website is a labour of love

Majesticare, the luxury care home group, has launched their new website. The launch has been the culmination of several months work which has involved our staff, residents and their families.

The site has already received thousands of visits and feedback from users has been fantastic. The key objective of Majesticare was to ensure that the quality of their homes and person centred approach to care delivery was mirrored by the design and content of their website.

Glebefields care centre was featured in the Banbury Guardian this week for its outstanding commitment to providing excellent social activities for its residents.

Spotlight on active residents

A BANBURY nursing home is in focus this week as cameras zoom in on their social activities which have been highlighted as an example of excellence in the care of the elderly.

Glebefields, a private residential home in Drayton, was picked out by the National Association for Provision of Activities for Older People (NAPA) as one of three institutions which demonstrate the breadth of social activities needed to keep elderly people happy, as active as possible and stimulated.

On Tuesday, film-maker Alex Goodman and his crew accompanied resident Phil Shapland and his daughter Annie Reid to the Redwings horse and donkey sanctuary at Oxhill to record an outing.

In the coming two weeks, the crew will be filming a wide range of social activities enjoyed by residents, from visits by volunteers and their pets to cooking clubs, swimming, art classes, trips to the theatre and to town, themed lunches, gardening and visiting entertainers.

Olympic gold medallist Zac Purchase MBE has officially opened the £1.5m Cotswold Suites at Tewkesbury Care Home.

Taking a break from his training he returned to the village of Bushley where he grew up - and is now a local sporting hero. 22 year old Zac won Olympic gold for the men's lightweight double sculls in Beijing. He said "These suites are more like a boutique hotel than a care home; I think team GB would enjoy a couple of weeks here. I'll have a word with my coach!"

The exclusive interior designed Cotswold Suites have each been named after Cotswold villages and feature direct-dial telephones, fully profiling electrically operated beds, fridges, satellite TV points, luxury level access shower rooms and patio doors. They have been designed to meet the needs of elderly guests requiring luxuries and comforts and seeking personal care rather than nursing care. Tewkesbury Care Home's experienced team of staff has for many years been renowned for high quality nursing care in its Abbey and Bushley rooms.

Speaking at the opening Roger Pratap, Majesticare's Chairman said "Tewkesbury Care Home is a premier facility for this region of the country. Ken Dodd is tickled to open care facility

Ken Dodd shared his happiness with friends old and new as he officially opened the £1.6 million extension of Majesticare’s care facility for dementia sufferers.

The veteran funnyman travelled – complete with trademark tickling sticks – from Knotty Ash to Lawton Rise Specialist Care Centre in Goldenhill to mark the opening.

The comedian is an old friend of retired former GP Dr Raj Pratap, whose son Roger is chairman of Majesticare. The pair first met in 1982 when Ken appeared at a charity fund-raiser at Kidsgrove Town Hall which then - rotary club president Dr Pratap organised with fellow members.

The main part of Ken's speech consisted of good-natured observations and jokes on the effects of getting old. But he – almost – got serious to stress the importance of vulnerable people feeling safe and loved and the importance of having facilities such as those at Lawton Rise.

The comic told The Sentinel: "It is a wonderful place. It's like a seven-star hotel and everything is lovely, comfortable and luxurious. The carers are all very cuddly and there is a lot of love around, so that is a good thing."

During his introductory speech, Mr Pratap described how care at the flagship Lawton Rise had been described as being "almost exceptional" by experts and the authorities, and it is ranked in the top six per cent of care homes in the UK.

He added that the centre of excellence has a string of features, based on the latest thinking on dementia, which are designed to sensitively create a community for sufferers.

As well as pictures and items from bygone years, there is a pub, potter's wheel, indoor garden and hair salon on site, so residents can continue to have normal lives in a safe environment.

Manager Sally Latham said: "We want to concentrate on what people can still do rather than what they can't, and encourage independence."

Lord Mayor Councillor Derek Capey said Majesticare had done a wonderful job with the extension, which will increase overall capacity across the site to 62 rooms.

He said: "If I ever needed facilities like this, I wouldn't hesitate in coming here."
